Oxy-Fuel Cutting – Process and Capacity

In oxy-fuel cutting, steel is oxidised and separated by a pure oxygen jet. The process is particularly economical for thick plates from approximately 25 mm up to 200 mm. Steel and Hardox can be cut to maximum thicknesses with high precision.

The CNC oxy-fuel cutting machine travels over a format of 20,000 × 3,500 mm. Large-format heavy plates and structural plates can be processed in a single pass. Automatic bevel cutting to ±45° enables weld seam preparation without secondary operations.

Flame-cut parts from Hardox, wear-resistant steel and fine-grain structural steel are manufactured to drawing. Individual parts and small batches are available without minimum order quantities.

Oxy-fuel cutting quality at Bock is managed under DIN EN ISO 9001:2015. Cut quality is assessed to EN ISO 9013 tolerances and full material traceability is maintained from mill certificate to finished part. The combination of large-format oxy-fuel cutting with in-house welding, CNC machining, shot blasting and industrial painting makes Bock a capable single-source supplier for complex heavy-plate fabrications. Components can progress from raw plate to a fully coated assembly entirely within the Lorch facility, eliminating external logistics costs and minimising overall project lead times for customers requiring complete heavy-plate fabrications.

Flame-cut parts are regularly processed further directly in-house: welding, sandblasting and painting in Lorch are integrated follow-on steps. External interim storage and logistics between production steps are eliminated – saving time and costs.

Quality assurance is carried out in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 with seamless material traceability. Material certificates for all steels and special steels used are provided on request or where a project requires them, and included with the delivery.

Materials for Oxy-Fuel Cutting

Oxy-fuel cutting is suitable for ferrous steels:

  • Structural steel S235, S355 – from 25 mm to 200 mm
  • Fine-grain structural steel to S1100 – high-strength, load-bearing
  • Hardox 400 / 500 – wear-resistant steel up to 200 mm
  • XAR 400 and other wear-resistant steels
  • Special steels to drawing and customer specification

For thin plates and stainless steel, CNC plasma cutting is the more economical process.

Typical Applications

Oxy-fuel cutting at Bock is used for:

  • Large-format blanks for heavy welded structures
  • Web plates, flanges and ribs for heavy-duty fabrications
  • Hardox plate blanks for wear parts and buckets
  • Bevel cuts as weld seam preparation
  • Structural parts for vehicle and plant engineering

Flame-cut parts can be welded, machined and surface-treated in the same facility.
