Portal Milling at Bock – what the Zayer Thera W delivers
A portal milling machine guides the milling head within a portal supported on both sides – this provides maximum rigidity for the heavy machining of large-format components. Bock operates two identical Zayer Thera W machines: the Thera W 26000 with a 26,000 mm travel path and the Thera W 16000 with a 16,000 mm travel path.
The 30° milling head is positionable in any position to 0.001°, making complex, angled and hard-to-reach surfaces accessible in a single setup. The stable roller way with adjustably pre-tensioned roller shoes ensures high rigidity and thus high dimensional accuracy – even over very long travel paths.
Two machines mean real capacity: parallel production of multiple orders, short lead times and reliability for time-critical projects. Programming is done from CAD data or drawing dimensions – single parts, prototypes and small batches alike, as contract manufacturing with no minimum order quantities.
The 2×25 t crane runway in the plant enables safe setup of heavy workpieces up to 50 t. After portal milling, components can move directly to boring mill, welding, sandblasting and painting – all in the same plant in Lorch, without external logistics between machining steps.

Typical Applications of Portal Milling
The Zayer Thera W portal milling machines at Bock are used for:
- Base plates and machine beds for heavy machinery engineering
- Beams, frames and cross members for vehicle and crane support systems
- Heavy parts with long flat surfaces and bore rows
- Complex-machined structural parts for plant and special machinery engineering
- Pre-machined blanks as a preparation stage for welded structures
Machined components can be welded, blasted and painted in the same facility. Portal milling in Lorch is particularly suited to large-format machine frames, guideways and structural parts with tight tolerances over long distances – a milling capacity rarely available at comparable contract manufacturers. Quality documentation and dimensional reports to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 are available as standard.

Materials for Portal Milling
Bock uses predominantly European quality steels:
- Structural steel S235, S355
- Fine-grain structural steel to S1100 – high-strength, weldable
- Hardox 400 / 500 – wear-resistant steel
- Stainless steel 1.4301, 1.4571 – corrosion-resistant
- Special steels to drawing and customer specification
Material certificates are provided on request or according to project requirements.

Frequently Asked Questions about Portal Milling
What is a portal milling machine?
In a portal milling machine, the milling head runs within a portal supported on both sides. This design is particularly rigid and suited to the precise heavy machining of large-format and long components in a single setup.
How large can the components be?
The Zayer Thera W 26000 offers travel paths of X 26,000 · Y 5,000 · Z 3,250 mm and a table clamping surface up to 26.5 × 4 m; the Thera W 16000 X 16,000 · Y 4,000 · Z 2,850 mm. Workpieces up to 50 t are set up using the 2×25 t crane.
Which materials are machined?
Structural steel S235/S355, fine-grain structural steel to S1100, Hardox 400/500 as well as stainless steel 1.4301/1.4571 and special steels to drawing. We provide material certificates on a project basis.
Do you also manufacture single parts?
Yes. Portal milling is carried out as contract manufacturing with no minimum order quantities – single parts, prototypes and small batches alike, programmed from CAD data or drawing dimensions.
