# CNC Turning and Vertical Lathe – Large Components up to 25 t

Vertical lathe turning for large rotationally symmetric heavy parts up to 25 t – precision-turned in steel, Hardox and stainless as contract manufacturing in Lorch, with no minimum order.
One of the largest vertical lathe tables in the region – for oversized rotationally symmetric components.
Even exceptionally tall components that cannot be machined on standard lathes. When boring from above, the usable height is up to 2,000 mm drilling height.
2×25 t crane system and hall infrastructure for safe handling of large workpieces.
Structural steel, fine-grain structural steel to S1100, Hardox 400/500 and stainless steel 1.4301/1.4571.
Single parts, prototypes and series parts are all manufactured to drawing alike.
Documented material traceability and dimensional reports for acceptance-relevant components.

## Vertical Lathe Machining – Process and Capacity

In vertical lathe machining, the workpiece rotates on a horizontal table while the cutting tool traverses vertically and horizontally. This makes the process ideal for large, heavy components that are too big for conventional lathes. The Ø 4,800 mm table provides an exceptional clamping area. When boring, the drilling head engages from above and limits the usable height to 2,000 mm drilling height. The height actually achievable depends on how the workpiece is clamped and supported – we are glad to advise on a project-specific basis.
With a build height of 2,400 mm, tall large components can be turned to precision tolerances. Flanges, rings and bushings for plant engineering, vehicle construction and special machinery are manufactured to drawing. CNC control ensures consistent dimensional accuracy. Quality assurance is carried out in accordance with DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 with full traceability.
The 2×25 t overhead crane system allows safe setup and positioning of heavy workpieces. Individual parts, small batches and recurring series parts are manufactured in Lorch – no minimum order quantities.
All vertical lathe operations at Bock are integrated into the wider manufacturing workflow. After turning, components can proceed directly to welding, boring mill machining, shot blasting or industrial painting within the same facility – saving logistics costs and lead time for multi-step contract manufacturing projects.
At Bock, vertical-turned parts are often used as a pre-fabrication stage for complex welded structures and special-machine components. Because turning, milling and welding work directly together in the same facility, components can be passed on without external logistics – significantly shortening lead times.
Heavy turned parts for crane and lifting-gear structures, vehicle systems and plant engineering are manufactured regularly at Bock. The 2×25-t crane system in the plant ensures reliable, safe handling and set-up of heavy parts up to 50 t – even with unwieldy dimensions.
CNC Machinery Overview

## Large parts on the vertical lathe table

### Tall cylinders, large drums

Up to 2,400 mm turning height and Ø 4,800 mm turning diameter – tall cylinder bodies as well as large-volume drums and housings.

### Welded structures turned in-house

Welded rings, drums and housings are turned bright on their functional surfaces in the same company – no external logistics between welding and turning.

### Dimensional report with the part

Dimensional inspection to drawing with calibrated measuring equipment; the dimensional report is included in the scope of supply on a project basis.

## Materials for CNC Turning and Vertical Lathe

Bock uses predominantly European-certified quality steels with full material traceability:
- Structural steel S235, S355 – Standard structural steel
- Fine-grained structural steel up to S1100 – high-strength, weldable
- Hardox 400 / 500 – wear-resistant steel for high-stress components
- Stainless steel 1.4301, 1.4571 – corrosion-resistant
- Special steels to drawing and customer specification
Material certificates and test reports are provided on request or according to project requirements.

## Typical Applications

Vertical lathe machining at Bock is used for large and heavy rotational components manufactured to drawing or specification:
- Flanges for pipelines, pressure vessels and plant engineering
- Bushings, hollow cylinders and rings for special machinery
- Large rings and disc parts for heavy-duty applications
- Mounting plates and base plates for machine foundations
- Turned components for vehicle and crane systems
Turned components are frequently used as a pre-machining stage for welded assemblies and heavy steel fabrications. Production and quality documentation to DIN EN ISO 9001:2015 is available as standard for all order types.

## Frequently asked questions about vertical turning

### What is vertical turning?

URL: https://bock-gmbh.com/en/services/cnc-turning-vertical-lathe/#faq-karusselldrehen

In vertical turning, the workpiece rotates on a horizontal turntable while the tool traverses vertically and horizontally – for rotationally symmetric components that are too large and too heavy for conventional lathes. For this, Bock uses the Feichter FKD30/20 CNC vertical lathe in contract manufacturing in Lorch, from single parts to series.

### Up to what diameter, what height and what weight is vertical turning carried out?

URL: https://bock-gmbh.com/en/services/cnc-turning-vertical-lathe/#faq-durchmesser-drehhoehe-gewicht-karusselldrehen

The vertical lathe turns up to Ø 4,800 mm turning diameter and 2,400 mm turning height; the workpiece weight is limited by the table load to 25 t. When drilling, the drilling head feeds from above and limits the usable height to 2,000 mm drilling height; the component height achievable in practice depends on how the workpiece is clamped and supported.

### Are smaller turned parts also produced on conventional lathes?

URL: https://bock-gmbh.com/en/services/cnc-turning-vertical-lathe/#faq-kleinere-drehteile-konventionelle-drehmaschinen

Yes. In addition to the vertical lathe, two conventional lathes are available: a TOS SUS 63H with Ø 655 mm turning diameter and 2,000 mm turning length, and a Meuser with Ø 350 mm turning diameter and 1,000 mm turning length.

### Can welded structures be turned on the vertical lathe?

URL: https://bock-gmbh.com/en/services/cnc-turning-vertical-lathe/#faq-schweisskonstruktionen-karussellgedreht

Yes. Large rings of welded construction are turned bright at the ring face on the vertical lathe; turning, milling and welding take place in the same company.
Heavy welded structures

### Is a dimensional report supplied with vertical-turned parts?

URL: https://bock-gmbh.com/en/services/cnc-turning-vertical-lathe/#faq-massprotokoll-karusselldrehteile

Yes, on a project basis. Dimensional inspection is carried out to drawing and tolerance specification with calibrated measuring equipment, and the dimensional report is included in the scope of supply; material certificates for the materials used are available on request.
